Deck builder in Parry Sound.
Granite, slopes and wind shape every deck project near Parry Sound. Garland Contracting builds and rebuilds decks, stairs and railings in Parry Sound, Seguin and McKellar, 56 km west of our base in Sprucedale.

Footings on bedrock
Much of the Parry Sound area sits on Canadian Shield granite. Bedrock is a strong base, and it also changes how a deck gets built. A footing cannot dig into solid rock, so builders anchor posts to the stone with pins or build up piers on a prepared surface. Rock cracks and low spots hold water, and wood posts need protection from it.
We look at the ground and choose a footing method that suits it. On soil, footings go below frost. On rock, we anchor and elevate posts so wood stays dry. The framing photo shows a deck during construction, with posts, beams and joists in place.
Wind and exposure
A deck on an open shoreline sees wind that lifts boards, rattles railings and pushes rain across the surface. We fasten decking and railings with the exposure in mind, brace taller posts and use fasteners that resist corrosion. Gaps between boards let water drain and let wind pass.
Stairs, landings and slopes
A rocky lot offers few flat spots. Stairs and landings connect levels, and they need consistent steps and handrails that meet the Ontario Building Code. Under the code, a deck with a drop of more than 600 mm needs a guard. We plan stairs and landings that fit the slope and the way you walk.

Rebuilds and rot
An older deck on the bay can have rotted posts, soft joists or a failed ledger. We inspect each part and replace what has decayed. See rot repair in Parry Sound for how we handle rotted framing.
Materials that handle weather on the bay
Pressure-treated lumber suits a bay-side deck when you seal it and keep it clean. Cedar weathers to a soft grey. Composite and PVC boards need little upkeep and handle moisture well. For railings, durable fasteners and sound posts matter more than the look of the top rail. We show samples and recommend the combination that suits your budget and exposure.
What to send for a deck quote on the bay
- Photos of the site and the slope
- A rough size and the height above ground
- Whether the ground is rock or soil
- Which side faces the water and the wind
- Photos of the framing from underneath, for a rebuild
Send those to (705) 238-8634. Dylan reviews them and visits larger jobs.
Railings in the wind
A railing on an open shoreline takes wind load and people leaning on it, often at the same time. Posts need a solid connection to the framing, and rails need fasteners that will not pull through. Open designs reduce wind load compared with solid panels. Tell us if you want glass or privacy panels, because those change the post spacing and the framing.
Stairs on rock
Stairs down a rocky slope need a firm base. A stringer that sits on loose gravel moves, and a step that sits on a slanted rock tips. We build landings on solid footings or anchored piers and size the steps for the slope. Handrails run the full length of the stair. Send photos of the slope and the rock, and we plan the stairs for the ground you have.
Pressure-treated, cedar or composite on a bay-side deck
| Surface | On the bay |
|---|---|
| Pressure-treated lumber | Holds up to moisture when sealed. Needs a stain or sealer on a schedule. |
| Cedar | Resists decay on its own and weathers to a soft grey. Costs more than treated lumber. |
| Composite and PVC | Handle wet, shade and wind with little upkeep. Cost the most to start and need correct spacing. |
Salt does not threaten a deck on Georgian Bay, because the water is fresh. Moisture, shade and ice do the damage. We help you choose a surface that matches your budget and the time you want to spend on upkeep.
