Siding contractor in Muskoka and the Almaguin Highlands.
Garland Contracting installs, replaces and repairs siding on commercial buildings, luxury homes, cottages and everyday houses within 100 km of Sprucedale. Siding and rot repair are most of our work.

What siding does on a building
Siding sheds water. It does not stop every drop, because wind pushes rain behind it, so the wall also needs house wrap and flashing underneath. A good siding job is a system: cladding, a water barrier, flashing at every opening and a path for water to drain out at the bottom.
When we replace siding, we install all of it. Skipping the layers under the siding is how a new exterior ends up with the same rot as the old one.
Materials we install and repair
| Material | What to know |
|---|---|
| Cedar and other wood | Warm look that suits cottages. Needs paint or stain on a schedule, and the finish decides how long it lasts. |
| Board and batten | Vertical boards with narrow strips over the joints. A common cottage-country style in wood, vinyl or steel. |
| Vinyl | Low upkeep and a wide range of colours. Needs room to expand and contract, and cold weather makes it more brittle. |
| Steel | Tough and low upkeep. A dent stays a dent, and installers need clean cuts and good trim details. |
| Fibre cement | Heavy, stable board that takes paint. It needs the right tools and careful flashing. |
We help you choose by looking at the building, the budget and how much upkeep you want. A cottage you open for three months a year and a house you heat all winter make different demands.
A siding job, step by step
- Strip the old siding and check the sheathing and framing behind it.
- Repair or replace anything soft. If rot shows, we fix the framing before anything goes on. See our rot repair page.
- Install house wrap, lapped so water runs out and down.
- Flash windows, doors, corners, roof edges and any penetration.
- Fit the cladding and trim, leaving a clear gap above the ground and above roofs and decks.
- Seal and caulk the joints that need it.
Details at windows, doors and roof edges decide how well a siding job holds up. Most siding failures start at one of those spots.
Repair or replace?
Repair works when damage stays limited to a few boards and the wall behind them is dry and solid. Replace the siding when boards are soft or cracked across a whole wall, or when water has reached the sheathing. A wall with a pattern of soft boards near the bottom has a sill or framing problem too.
Send photos of each wall. We look at the lowest boards, the corners, the areas around windows and any stains, and tell you which option fits.
Siding for commercial and luxury properties
We take commercial contracts for businesses, resorts and lodges, rental and multi-unit properties and property managers, and we work on high-end homes and cottages around Lake Rosseau, Lake Muskoka and Lake of Bays. Both kinds of job need clean trim details, matched lines at corners and a plan for scaffold and access. Send the plans or a description and we price it. See the commercial page for the full list.
Signs your siding needs attention
- Boards that cup, split or lift at the ends
- Paint or stain that peels in sheets
- Stains running down from windows, corners or roof edges
- Soft or dark boards near the ground
- Gaps at corners and trim where caulking has failed
- Siding that rattles in the wind
- Moss or algae that returns right after cleaning
One of those signs on its own may call for a repair. Several on the same wall point to a wall that needs a closer look. Photograph each wall from a few steps back and up close, and send them to us.
Upkeep by material
Wood and cedar need a new coat of paint or stain on a schedule, and the schedule depends on how much sun and weather the wall gets. Fibre cement takes paint and needs repainting over time. Vinyl and steel need washing and an occasional check of the trim and caulking. A material that costs less to install can cost more over the years if you need to repaint it often, so we talk about upkeep when we quote.
Getting a price
Text photos of the wall to (705) 238-8634, or fill out the quote form. Prices depend on how far the damage goes and how much access the work needs, so photos or a site visit come first. For larger and commercial jobs, Dylan Garland walks the site and sets the price. Quotes are free.
Questions about siding
Which siding materials do you work with?
We install and repair cedar and other wood siding, board and batten, vinyl, steel and fibre cement.
Should I repair or replace my siding?
Repair works when the damage stays limited to a few boards and the wall behind them is dry and solid. Replace the siding when boards are soft or cracked across a whole wall, or when water has reached the sheathing.
Do you replace the house wrap and flashing too?
Yes. A siding job covers the water barrier and flashing under the cladding, because those layers decide how long the new siding stays dry.
Do you do siding on commercial buildings?
Yes. We take contracts for businesses, resorts and lodges, rental and multi-unit properties and property managers.
What happens if you find rot behind the old siding?
We repair the framing first with new lumber, then close the wall. Rot repair is part of our core work.
